In Collaboration with Author Leia Barrett

Leia Barrett is a local Northland author who has a love for pups and writing children’s books. Leia has just written a book called The Odd Dog, about a pup that is learning to live with its family.

When I got a copy of The Odd Dog my kids and I were so excited to get into it. The story follows along with a sweet little dog that has just been adopted and is learning all about his new family and environment. The illustrations in this book are so cute and fitting for the story. For a full video review of the cutest children’s book you can click the links below.

You should grab a copy of this book for your kids easter basket, or get it for your child’s teacher to add to their classroom library, OR get it just because its a cute children’s book and its supporting one of our local 816ers - which is what this group is all about!

You can get a copy just in time for those Easter baskets because on March 29th Leia will be doing a book signing and fundraiser for FOPAS at Parkville Coffee. Proceeds from this event will go to FOPAS to help pups there find their furever homes.

Northland Dog of the Week

Barb

Each week we showcase a dog from one of the Northland shelters that needs a new home. This week we have 3 pups that are looking for their furever homes. This week we are working with Pawsitive Tails Dog rescue to try and help these Northland Pups find a home.

Mustard - Meet Mustard! Mustard is a 3-month-old Australian Cattle Dog/Staffordshire Terrier/Pit Bull/Husky mix with the prettiest eyes! She will be an estimated 35-60 lbs. fully grown. Mustard is a shadow! She is always following her foster mama around and loves sitting on her foster’s feet. She loves to be the center of attention. Her motto is play hard and crash harder! She sure loves her sleep and snuggles. This little saucy nugget already knows how to sit pretty for a treat and should be a pretty quick learner if you’re willing to put in the effort!

Barb - Sweet little Barb is deaf but she doesn’t let that hold her back. Barb is 2-3 months old and right now she’s busy being a puppy and doing puppy things. But it’s time for her to start learning how to be a proper dog and she’ll need a human who’s ready to teach her all those things: house training, walking on leash, snoozing in a safe crate. She’s a little sponge at this point & eager to soak it all up.

Paw-Casso - Paw-casso has been extremely socialized and does well with respecting older dog boundaries. In fact, this boy’s perfect home would be with another dog (or two) to keep him entertained but also to show him how to be the very best dog. He loves playtime with other dogs! If he’s the only pup in the home, he’ll need plenty of walks and enrichment toys to keep him busy (and tire him out!).
Paw-casso loves his humans, too and loves nothing more than a good lap snuggle. He’s a super smart boy and picks up on new cues quickly. He is doing well with potty training and while he’s not a big fan of the kennel, he is adjusting well. With a little patience and consistency, Paw-casso will be crate trained in no time.

Authentic Street Tacos in Parkville

In 2024, K Tacos and More burst onto the scene in the Northland, and it's quickly becoming a beloved local hangout. Specializing in street tacos, this spot is a must-visit. I recently had the pleasure of stopping by and sampling some of their popular dishes. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by the delightful mother-daughter team, Rosa and Mari. Their hospitality is one of the reasons K Tacos feels so special—they make you feel like you're right at home in their kitchen, complete with friendly smiles and welcoming hugs!

I tried three different street tacos: carne asada, pastor, and shrimp. If you go, don't miss out on the shrimp taco—the spices are absolutely incredible! I also indulged in their famous chorizo queso, which was hot and packed with chorizo, making it the perfect chip companion. To round off my meal, I sipped on a Spicy Margarita that was so delicious, I’m sure I’ll be dreaming about it. It had a tantalizing spicy aroma and was the most flavorful margarita I've ever tasted. Seriously, don’t skip it! I also tried their weekend special, a paloma served in a cup straight from Mexico. It was refreshingly perfect for a summer day.

K Tacos has lots of exciting plans in the works. Mari crafts a new cocktail each weekend, and they're about to unveil their happy hour menu. They're gearing up for a big Cinco de Mayo celebration in May and will soon launch their seasonal spring menu. Rosa, the owner, is a tequila connoisseur and plans to host top-shelf tequila tastings. So, make sure to follow them on Facebook or Instagram to stay updated on all the fun happenings—and definitely swing by to ask Mari for a Spicy Marg!
